The Colorado Beetle Kill Trade Association Announces the Opening of a New Blue Wood Showroom in Breckenridge Colorado

Breckenridge, Colorado, May 22, 2009

Today the Colorado Beetle Kill Trade Association announced the June 8th opening of a new Blue Wood showroom in Breckenridge Colorado to draw attention to companies, products, and services that use lumber from beetle killed trees.

Over 1,500,000 acres of trees have been affected by the pine beetle infestation currently devastating Colorados high country forests. More than 1 billion board feet of timber may be killed each year during an outbreak. This may be the largest forest insect blight ever seen in North America leaving behind a deforested area about the size of Rhode Island.

"It's shocking," said Jeff Witcosky, an entomologist for the U.S. Forest Service in Lakewood, Colorado in a July, 2008 USAToday article. "We talk about the grieving process."
The biggest problem in the eradication of the beetle is that homes and businesses are close to the infected trees. A controlled burn could be very problematic. The dead trees pose an enormous threat to residents and the public if dead trees fall on roads and power lines or if a wild fire occurs.

Jesse Logan, a forest ecologist, in the same USAToday article, sees evidence of a bigger problem in the beetle infestation than fire: global warming. "This is one of the canary-in-the-coal-mine warning signs," he said. The beetles are now moving into higher elevations, where bitter winter temperatures used to keep them at bay, Logan said.
The blue color in the wood results from a blue stain fungus the bark beetles carry into the trees. The fungus is harmless to humans, pets and livestock and does not affect the structural integrity or strength of the wood at all. It does however, kill the infected trees.

This new Breckenridge showroom will highlight Colorado companies and individuals and their many creative, practical, and ingenious answers to this huge problem. These solutions include: beautiful furniture, works of art, flooring, decking, interior and exterior siding and much more. Also available is information on a variety of Sustainable Alternative Energy solutions. Congressman Jared Polis (CO-2) offered his support. Colorados beetle epidemic has fundamentally changed our landscape, a landscape that is the foundation of our communities and our tourist economy, said Polis. I welcome this effort to bring together all aspects of the community and raise awareness of this growing problem. Together we can find innovative solutions that will reduce the fire risk around our communities in a sustainable and responsible way.
We need more people and their creative ideas to solve this problem right now and this showroom is an ideal way to get the message out. said Rich Dziomba, Acting Director of the CBKTA. Businesses and citizens have the opportunity to experience some of the many creative ways to use this underutilized resource and get the information that they need.

The showroom will open to the public June 8, 2009 at 10 Farmers Lane, Suites 1 & 2, Breckenridge CO 80424 and is being hosted by Charise Buckley, owner of Full Circle Design Group, Inc., 970.453.7100, email: fullcircledesign@comcast.net, website: www.fullcircledesign.biz.

An invitation only silent opening will take place Friday May 29th from 4PM to 7PM with Congressman Polis performing a ribbon cutting ceremony around 4:30 PM. Media representatives are encouraged to attend.

ABOUT The Colorado Beetle Kill Trade Association  The CBKTA was formed in 2008 by a consortium of businesses determined to make a difference, as well as a profit, using beetle kill lumber. Many of the members of the association are active participants in different task forces and committees seeking answers to Colorados beetle kill problem.

The founding members of the CBKTA seek to unify the organizations that are making a difference and create a single association whose focus is to assemble the ideas and implement the solutions of entrepreneurs, governments and individuals statewide.

Our collective resources, ideas and efforts have created an infrastructure that allows disparate interests from, private industry, government, and citizens an effective forum to work together and execute solutions.
