In the early 1980s, the University of Minnesota Duluths Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI, Duluth) developed much of the technology needed to initiate the pelletized fuels industry. As a fuels laboratory, Twin Ports Testing served as the testing firm for the NRRI to develop wood pellet fuels.
In the early years of the pellet industry, the Fiber Fuels Institute in Minneapolis and the American Pellet Fuels Institute formed by organizations interested in the specific concerns with fuel production. Both organizations merged in 1985 to form what is now the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia.)
TPT has maintained an active role in the development of this industry since its inception. Over the years, TPT has worked with numerous organizations including the FFI, APFI, PFI, NRRI, The Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI), universities, private industry, including pellet fuel manufacturers, pellet mill equipment producers, and pellet fuel appliance manufacturers to evaluate various forms of biomass.
And we have not limited ourselves to pellets. Over the years, countless forms of biomass have been evaluated in our lab including wood, wood wastes, agricultural residues, nut shells, pits, seeds, refuse derived fuels, paper, paper wastes, and numerous other materials for chemical and physical properties pertinent in determining their potential for use in making fuel.
TPT provides laboratory analysis services that go well beyond the reporting of results. TPT has a solid understanding of how pellet mills work. We understand how analysis values may affect the proper functioning of biomass burning appliances. We understand mill QA/QC, and consult mills in setting up in-house testing labs and develop their internal QA/QC programs. We are also versed on the testing requirements of numerous foreign countries and consult mills desiring to export product.
TPT consults the biomass renewable energy marketplace offering insight and direction as researchers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists set out in this rapidly changing business environment. According to TPT's Chris Wiberg, Were completely integrated offering vital information. As we push to alleviate our nations dependence on foreign oil, technological advances are emerging daily, and weve been there every step of the way leading the efforts.
