Beginning tomorrow, Bay Area residents could be fined $400 for using their fireplace.
If you haven't done so already, it's a good time to help the environment, and use your fireplace for looks only.
November 1 to February 28 is Spare the Air season. When the Bay Area Air Quality Management District determines it's a Spare the Air Day no wood, pellet, or manufactured log burning is allowed.
Fireplaces, outdoor pits and wood and pellet stoves are included in the ban.
First offenders will be given a warning. The second violation could result in a $400 fine.
If you intend to use your fireplace or wood stove this winter, you should sign up for Spare the Air Day alerts.
The wood-burning ban is necessary because our air quality isn't what it should be to support good health.
If you think Christmas won't be the same without a fire going, you may want to invest in some attractive candles to light up your hearth.
Choose fragrance-free candles, or you'll be trading outdoor pollution for indoor pollution. Beeswax candles are a good choice.
Environmental pollution is forcing us all to make changes. Hopefully these changes will result in a better world for everyone to enjoy.
