University of Montana & Biomax

University of Montana logoThe University of Montana in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Community Power Corporation will present an innovative portable heat and power demonstration. Advanced downdraft gasification technology is packed aboard a custom 40 foot trailer in a unique concept developed by Community Power and UM. The system is capable of generating 25 kilowatts of electrical power and recovering up to 200,000 Btu/hr of thermal heat. Community Power Corporation will present an innovative portable heat and power demonstrationThe fuel can be waste wood or agricultural residues. This mobile demonstration laboratory will tour Montana and the greater northwest region to introduce and educate potential stakeholders about this distributed power generation technology. Funding for this project is provided by the U. S. Department of Agriculture through its Biomass Research and Development Initiative http://www.brdisolutions.com.

Fuels for Schools and Beyond

Fuels for Schools projectThe Fuels for Schools and Beyond program is a partnership between the USDA Forest Service’s State & Private Forestry Division, the State Foresters of Montana, North Dakota, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, and the Bitter Root Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area, Inc., to promote and facilitate the use of forest biomass waste for heating, cooling and power in public and private buildings. The Fuels for Schools Initiative came out of directives from the National Fire Plan of 2001 which included specific grant dollars for pilot projects to demonstrate new uses of small diameter and underutilized woody material, as well as projects using proven technologies to use such material.

The Fuels for Schools and Beyond partners provide a great resource for implementing community biomass energy projects and have, to date, provided financial and technical assistance in the installation of 14 small- to medium-scale biomass boiler systems throughout the West. These include both wood chip and wood pellet fired systems ranging in size from 680,000 – 30 million BTU/hr output. Our program staff is available to assist those in the private and public sectors with feasibility assessments, identifying financing opportunities, fuel supply assessments, advising on the bidding process for project design, construction, and fuel supply, and overall support and assistance as needed.

Montana Forest Stewardship Services LogoOur treatments attempt to restore a forest to historically validated conditions. To accomplish this, MFSS utilizes manual labor and custom fabricated forestry equipment. We utilize this specialty equipment because our customers demand true low-impact work in project areas. Our equipment is unobtrusive and efficient being well suited for use in small forest acreages near homes. We are well accustomed to the public scrutiny of our project areas and strive to avoid soil disturbance, soil compaction, leave tree scarring, and noise pollution. MFSS makes maximum use of wood fiber by marketing commercial products.
