Southern Research Station
Forest management is the process of actively working with our natural resources to create desired ecological conditions while providing a wide range of goods and services that society values. Management is the application of tools and techniques to effect change. The Forest Operations Research Unit of the US Forest Service (located in Auburn,
Alabama) works to develop basic information about how operational systems function. They study things like: production and cost of different types of technology, interactions among different steps in woods work, health and safety in forest operations, environmental impacts like soil disturbance and compaction, and the application of information technology to improve efficiency and reduce impacts. Research results are shared through publications, presentations and decision tools. The Unit has four scientists and works on projects across the country.
